Various theories about the virus's origin have circulated, including the possibility of it escaping from a Wuhan lab. However, WHO investigators suggest the virus likely passed from bats in southern China to humans via wildlife farms. These farms, which breed exotic animals, were supplying animals to markets in Wuhan where early COVID-19 cases were found. The Chinese government, promoting these farms for poverty alleviation, shut them down in February 2020, suspecting their role in virus transmission.
