NASA renames its next-gen telescope after woman chief astronomer credited with launching the Hubble telescope

The Roman Space Telescope, named after Nancy Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer, is set to launch in the mid-2020s. It features a 2.4-meter mirror and a 300-megapixel wide field instrument, offering a field of view 100 times greater than Hubble's. The telescope will also include a Chronograph instrument for high contrast imaging. Its mission includes surveying the Milky Way to find around 2600 exoplanets and researching dark energy to understand cosmic expansion. The primary mission is five years, with a potential five-year extension.
