Argentina faces a significant debt challenge, with a total of $315 billion. The Minister of Finance, Hernán Lacunza, emphasizes the need for a swift and friendly renegotiation of this debt, regardless of the outcome of the upcoming elections. Argentina must regain access to voluntary debt markets, as no country can sustainably pay all debt commitments for an extended period. Lacunza and the Central Bank President, Guido Sandleris, are set to meet with the IMF's new director, Kristalina Georgieva, to discuss the situation. In 2018, Argentina agreed to a fiscal adjustment with the IMF in exchange for a $57 billion credit, of which $44 billion has been received. The country's debt is 68% of its GDP, and it is experiencing a recession and high inflation. The presidential elections are approaching, with Alberto Fernández leading the polls against the incumbent, Mauricio Macri.
