The assassination of Sergei Kirov leads to an investigation revealing a plot against Stalin. Stalin uses the NKVD to target counter-revolutionaries, resulting in widespread political repression known as the Great Purge. Various groups are accused and executed or sent to gulags. After four years, Stalin ends the purge, executing NKVD leaders and consolidating his power, costing nearly 700,000 lives.
