American Airlines Set To Lay Off 19,000 Employees

The travel industry continues to suffer due to the pandemic, leading American Airlines to furlough over 19,000 employees in October. Despite 23,000 employees accepting buyouts or early retirement, the company will cut 40,000 jobs, with flight attendants and pilots being the most affected. The $25 billion federal stimulus received by American Airlines will run out by the end of September, and the company needs another $25 billion to avoid further layoffs. Starting 2020 with nearly 140,000 employees, American Airlines expects to have fewer than 100,000 by October.
