The life sentence of Leonard Peltier - Native American Stories - One Minute History

In 1973, the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation faced conflict with its tribal government, leading to the involvement of the American-Indian Movement (AIM) and Leonard Peltier. On June 26, 1975, a shootout at Jumping Bull Ranch resulted in the deaths of two FBI agents and a tribe member. Despite over 40 Native Americans participating, only three were charged, with two acquitted on self-defense grounds. Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to life, amid claims of coerced witnesses and withheld evidence. Efforts continue for his release, with a parole hearing set for July 2024.
