The Ikhshidid State was founded by Muhammad ibn Tughj, whose father was a governor in Damascus. Muhammad was a key military leader in the Abbasid army, successfully defending Egypt from the Fatimid army in 915 AD. He was later appointed as the governor of Egypt and Syria, earning the title 'Ikhshid', meaning 'King of Kings'. He secured the pilgrimage route from Bedouin attacks, which pleased the Abbasid caliph. Muhammad expanded his influence beyond Egypt, solidifying his power in the region.
