Pope Francis expressed his willingness to visit North Korea if invited, as stated in an interview with South Korean television. The idea of a papal visit was first discussed in 2018 when South Korean President Moon Jae-in engaged with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. However, relations between the Koreas worsened after the failed summit between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019, and further deteriorated with the election of South Korean President Jun Suk-kyol.
