In 387 BC, Brennus led the Celts from northern France to besiege Clusium, sparking conflict with Rome. The Roman Senate sent Quintus Fabius and his brothers to negotiate, but violence ensued. The Celts, led by Brennus, marched towards Rome, defeating the Roman army at the Battle of the Allia. The Celts then sacked Rome, with citizens fleeing to the Capitoline Hill. Brennus demanded a heavy gold tribute, famously declaring 'Vae Victis' (woe to the vanquished). Eventually, the Celts were pushed out of Italy as the Roman Empire expanded, leading to the decline of Celtic culture.
