Pasteur discovered that specific microorganisms were responsible and developed pasteurization, a process of heating and cooling liquids to kill germs. This method gained popularity across industries facing similar issues, such as wine, vinegar, and milk. Pasteur's work on germ theory led him to enter a scientific competition organized by the French Academy of Science, where he competed against another scientist, Pouchet.
