The unrest was sparked by the assassination of radical Muslim leader Ibrahim Ismail, who was seen as a successor to Abu Drogo Mohammed. The tensions led to the burning of a Salvation Army church near Masjid Musa. The Shebab group, linked to Ismail, had recently claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a Nairobi mall.
