This incident is part of a series of kidnappings in Nigeria, including the infamous 2014 Chibok abduction by Boko Haram. Criminal groups in Nigeria have increasingly targeted schools, seeking ransom payments. Their activities have resulted in over 8,000 deaths and displaced more than 200,000 people since 2011.
