Italy, Venice - Torcello Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta

Maria Asunta is a basilica church on Torchello island, Venice, known for its Venetian Byzantine architecture. Founded in 639, it features early mosaics and has undergone several renovations. The original structure included a nave, aisles, and an apse, with only parts of the central apse wall and Baptistry surviving. The facade, with its narthex and annexes, dates back to the 11th century. Inside, the church boasts a marble pavement, bishop's throne, and significant mosaics, including a depiction of the Madonna and a universal judgment scene. The church also houses relics like Saint Cecilia's skull.
