VOICED : Kenya taps geothermal heat to boost power

Kenya faces frequent power cuts, but the potential for cheap renewable energy is growing as the country taps into geothermal hot spots in the Great Rift Valley. The thin crust in this region allows easy access to steam for electricity generation. The Kenyan government aims to become a world leader in geothermal energy, with numerous potential sites identified. While hydroelectric power has been affected by droughts, geothermal energy offers a reliable 24-hour supply. Recent installations have doubled Kenya's geothermal output, making it the eighth largest producer globally. The government plans to triple electricity capacity by 2020, aiming for middle-income status by 2030.
