Uruguay has initiated the sale of recreational cannabis in pharmacies, a first-of-its-kind state-controlled system. Sales are limited to 40 grams per month per person, with a price of approximately $1.30 per gram. The initiative aims to regulate cannabis use and combat narcotraffic. The law, part of a broader cannabis regulation strategy, was approved in 2013. Currently, about 160,000 people consume cannabis in Uruguay, a country with a population of 3.4 million.
