In a dystopian future, Winston Smith lives in Airstrip One, a part of Oceania, under the oppressive rule of the Party led by Big Brother. The Party controls truth through the Ministry of Truth, where Winston works. He secretly despises the Party and is drawn to O'Brien, who might share his rebellious thoughts. Winston is also suspicious of Julia, a colleague. The Party uses Newspeak to limit thought, and Winston dreams of freedom, symbolized by the ability to say 2+2=4. He fears Thought Crime and the Thought Police, as he navigates life under constant surveillance.
