The story describes a deadly plague called the Red Death that devastates a country. Prince Prospero, in an attempt to avoid the plague, secludes himself and a thousand of his courtiers in an opulent abbey. They hold a grand masquerade ball in a suite of seven rooms, each decorated in a different color. A mysterious masked figure, resembling a victim of the Red Death, appears at the ball, causing fear and horror among the guests. Prince Prospero confronts the figure but dies in the process.
