In Edgar Allan Poe's 'The Mask of the Red Death,' a deadly plague known as the Red Death ravages the land. Prince Prospero, in an attempt to avoid the disease, secludes himself and a thousand of his courtiers in an opulent abbey. They hold a grand masquerade ball in a suite of seven distinctively colored rooms. As the night progresses, a mysterious figure dressed as a victim of the Red Death appears, causing fear and chaos. Prince Prospero confronts the figure, only to fall dead. The figure is revealed to be the embodiment of the Red Death, which claims the lives of all the revelers, leaving the abbey silent and lifeless.
