A narrator visits Simon Wheeler to learn about Leonidas W. Smiley but hears about Jim Smiley, a man known for betting on anything and usually winning. Jim Smiley had a horse and a dog that won him bets, but his most famous bet involved a frog named Daniel Webster. Smiley trained the frog to jump far, winning many bets. However, a stranger tricked Smiley by filling the frog with pellets, causing it to lose a jumping contest. The stranger won the bet and left with the money, leaving Smiley to discover the trick too late.
