The story 'Tops and Bottoms' by Janet Stevens is about a lazy bear and a clever hare. Bear inherits wealth and land but prefers to sleep, while Hare, who lost his land in a bet, is struggling. Hare proposes a business deal to Bear, offering to plant and harvest crops in exchange for a share of the profits. Bear chooses the tops of the crops, but Hare tricks him by keeping the valuable parts. In subsequent seasons, Bear chooses the bottoms and then both tops and bottoms, but Hare continues to outsmart him. Eventually, Bear learns to manage his own crops, and Hare buys back his land, opening a vegetable stand. They remain neighbors but never business partners again.
