William Shakespeare, hailed as the greatest English writer and dramatist, was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. He began his career as an actor and part-owner of a theater company in London. His early works were comedies and histories, later shifting to tragedies like Hamlet and Macbeth. In his final years, he wrote tragic comedies such as The Winter's Tale. Shakespeare retired to Stratford and died at 52, possibly from a fever after a night of heavy drinking.
