The story follows Duke Theseus, ruler of Athens, who after conquering Amazonia, marries Queen Hippolyta. On his return to Athens, he encounters widows mourning their husbands, killed by Creon, the tyrant of Thebes. Theseus vows to avenge them, defeats Creon, and liberates Thebes. Two knights, Arcite and Palamon, are imprisoned in Athens, where they both fall in love with Emily, Hippolyta's sister. Arcite is eventually released but exiled from Athens.
