Why did the oxen have to work so hard in New Braunfels?

• First, they had to pull the wagon up and down the banks of the river and then they had to pull the wagon over rough and rutted streets.

• First, they had to take a long walk around the town to make sure their legs didn't stiffen up and then they had to swim across the river to fetch a wagon to bring back to town.

• There were no oxen in New Braunfels.

Where did they go first in New Braunfels?

• They went to the Verein Headquarters.

• They went to restock their supplies at the town store.

• They went to send a letter back home to Opa.

Why has the Verein not picked up the people on the beach?

• First the wagons broke down and they couldn't find supplies to fix them and now there weren't enough people to drive them.

• First the rains made it impossible to cross rivers and now the government has taken all of the wagons.

• First the dry weather dried up the rivers so that the oxen didn't have water along the way and now the Verein shut down because they didn't have enough money.

What was wrong with Mina’s father’s land?

• He was told there was barbed wire around it so he would need to pay attention where he was going.
