Model how to sound out each word by identifying the beginning, middle, and ending sounds before students attempt the matching items. Then have students explain why a missing letter completes R_N as run and use the multiple-choice items to connect decoded words with their meanings or pictures.
Watch for students choosing a whole-word option instead of supplying the missing vowel in R_N, or confusing lowercase and uppercase options such as run and Run. In the matching and picture-based questions, students may select a visually similar word without sounding it out; ask them to read each option aloud and compare all of its sounds.
