Free Printable Fractions on a Number Line Worksheets for Grade 4

In 4th grade, students move beyond the 0-1 interval to work with fractions greater than 1, including mixed numbers and improper fractions. They also use the number line as a tool to visualize and compare fractions with different denominators and to identify equivalent fractions.

The number line is a powerful visual tool for comparison. To compare 2/3 and 3/4, for example, have students draw two parallel number lines of the same length from 0 to 1. They can partition the top one into thirds to mark 2/3 and the bottom one into fourths to mark 3/4. They will visually see that 3/4 is further to the right and therefore greater.

A frequent mistake is misinterpreting the whole number part. When placing a number like 2 1/2, a student might locate it halfway between 0 and 2, or halfway along the entire visible line segment. Reinforce that 2 1/2 means "two whole units and then an additional half," so it must be located in the interval between the integers 2 and 3.

Fourth-grade practice should focus on building complexity. Use worksheets that ask students to: locate mixed numbers and improper fractions on number lines that extend past 1; identify two different fractions that land on the same point to show equivalence (e.g., 1/2 and 2/4); and order a set of unlike fractions by placing them on a single number line.

In Grade 4, the Common Core standards (4.NF) require students to extend their understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering. The number line serves as a crucial visual model for explaining why fractions are equivalent (e.g., why 1/2 = 2/4) and for comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators before they rely on abstract procedures.
