The National Games

The most important sport event in Indonesia is PON. PON is stand for Pekan Olah Raga National which also means National games. It was first held in Solo in September 1949. Only few provinces participated in that game because the Indonesian people were struggling to defend their independence.

PON is held once in four years in different places. Any city in Indonesian can be the host of PON as long as it is able to hold them. The participants of PON come from each province in our country, which is represented by its best athletes.

To begin the competition there is an opening ceremony. It is started by lighting of the PON torch raising of the PON flag, the parade of the participants and the reading of the oath.

The athletes compete in two kinds of sports; the athletics, which consists of, track events and field events, and games such as volleyball, football, and tennis. The winners get medals for the honour. The first winner gets gold, second winner or runner up gets silver and the third winner get bronze medals.

Materials:

Steps:

1. Take the two flower pots and fill them with the potting soil-leaving about an inch from the top of the post unfilled.

2. Make a hole in the center of the potting soil with your thumb (this is where you will place your seeds) in both pots.

3. Drop a few seeds in the hole in each pot and cover the hole with the soil.

4. Water one of the flower pots (careful not to over water) and place this flower pot in a warm sunny spot.

5. Do not water the second flower pot and place it in a cool dark cupboard. Leave the flower pot for a few days and watch to see what happens to both pots.

The watered flower pot grows because the water has been absorbed by seeds and the sunlight has helped it along. Be sure to water your growing plant every couple of days so that it does not dry up and fade away.

How to Make Serundeng

Ingredients:

- 25 grams grated coconut

- 1 stalk lemongrass (bruished)

- 2 cloves garlic

- 4 shallots

- 100 cc tamarind extract

- 150 grams peanuts (unsalted)

- 2 tablespoons cooking oil

- 2 tablespoons brown sugar

Spices:

- 1 teaspoon shrimp paste (toasted)

- 2 teaspoons ground coriander

- 1 teaspoon ground cumin

- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric

Direction:

1. Grind shallots and garlic into paste using a pestle and mortar or food processor.

2. Heat oil in a wok or frying pan.

3. Mix all ingredients and slowly fry over low heat, stir continuously until golden brown.

4. Put serundeng on a baking dish and place it in a low oven or drain serundeng using a spider spoon to lessen the oil. Then, remove the lemongrass.

5. Leave cool and store in an airtight jar.
