can dig below ground level and remain there until the flames pass

c)

feast on small insects escaping from the fires

d)

have a large supply of water stored in their bodies to last through

the fire

Animal 4

3.

How do the shells of a tortoise and a snail help them survive?

a)

They help the organisms move from one place to another.

b)

They help the organisms defend themselves against predators.

c)

They help the organisms catch and kill their food.

d)

None of these

4.

Anteaters have very long noses that are adapted to help them survive. Although they have poor eyesight, anteaters have an excellent sense of smell that helps them detect their surroundings. Anteaters are also good swimmers and can use their noses like a snorkel held above the water.

How does an anteater’s nose help it meet its needs?

a)

Its nose can be used to fight off predators.

b)

Its nose can be used as a paddle to help it swim.

c)

Its sticky tongue can quickly catch insects to eat.

d)

Its powerful sense of smell helps it find insects to eat.

5.

5 Cactus plants are adapted to live in hot, dry conditions. One adaptation is that it has a modified leaf, called a spine, instead of traditional leaves. Spines protect the cactus from animals that might eat the cactus as a water source. Spines help shade the cactus from the Sun by reducing heat and water loss. Since spines do not fall off the cactus as most leaves do, the cactus can use the Sun’s energy to make food all year long.

Which function of the spines is most like that of traditional leaves?

a)

A They do not drop during cold weather.

b)

B They keep away animals who might eat the plant.

c)

C They reduce water loss from the plant.

d)

D They shade the plant from the Sun's heat.

6.

The Douglas fir is an evergreen tree native to the western region of North America. The Douglas fir can grow to 75 meters and live for about 500 years. The bark is thick and cork-like. The leaves look like a needle and are about 3.5 cm long. The seedlings are not shade-tolerant so very few exist in Douglas fir forests. The Sugar Maple tree is a deciduous tree native to northeastern Canada and the New England states of the U.S. The tree prefers cooler climates and is shade-tolerant. The Sugar Maple can grow to 35 meters. The leaves are about 20cm long and 20 cm wide. The bark is shaggy. The Sugar Maple is best known as the source for maple syrup.

The Sugar Maple tree is better adapted for surviving in a thick forest than Douglas fir trees because the characteristics of Sugar Maples ―

a)

allow the tree to thrive in shade

b)

prevent the leaves from dropping in colder weather

c)

encourage the tree to produce tree sap

d)

reduce the thickness of the bark

7.

The Roadrunner

The roadrunner is the largest bird in the cuckoo family. This bird has dark feathers streaked with white; a long, upward-pointing tail; a crest of feathers topping its head; and four toes—two that face forward and two facing backward. A roadrunner also has a patch of blue and orange skin behind a pair of bright yellow eyes.

Roadrunners are fast on their feet, running from 15 to 18 mph. Although they are able to fly, they prefer to run and use their speed to catch lizards, small birds, snakes, small mammals, and insects. Their swiftness also enables them to escape predators. Their natural predators include coyotes, skunks, and hawks.

Roadrunners live primarily in deserts. In the United States, they are found across the Southwestern states. Since they do not migrate to cooler climates, they have several ways to deal with the heat in order to avoid dehydration. They are able to lower their body temperature at night to 94° F from a daytime body temperature of 101° F. To help store water, they eliminate salt through glands in their noses instead of through their urine. They rest in the shade during the heat of the day and warm up in the morning by turning their backs to the Sun and fluffing their feathers to expose their black skin to the Sun’s rays.

Refer to The Roadrunner reading passage. Which behavior of humans is similar to the roadrunner's behavior of excreting salt through the nose?

a)

running fast in soccer

b)

squinting in bright sunlight

c)

shivering in cold weather

d)

sweating to cool off
