The Importance of the Kidneys
The kidneys in your body are in the main organs of excretion. You can think of your kidneys as two red-brown, bean-shaped organs. Each kidney is about the size of a fist. They are located just below the ribcage-one on each side of the spine.
Why are your kidneys important? Most people know that the kidneys remove harmful waste products and excess fluid from the body through urine. Removing waste from the blood or filtering the blood is the primary function of the kidneys. To achieve this, the kidneys are equipped with lots of blood vessels. If any substance that is not useful to the body is allowed to build it up, it can be fatal (deadly). It is therefore important that wastes are removed from the body quickly.
The kidneys, the main organ in the urinary system, handles this process. Urea and uric acid are the chief waste products. These two deadly substances are easily expelled from the body by the kidneys, through excretion.
Another important function of the kidney is to regulate, control and maintain the correct volume of water in the body. Excess water in the body can dilute the blood. On the other hand, insufficient water can cause problems of circulation and brain function.
The kidneys also regulate the amount of salt in the body. If you eat a salty meal, the blood absorbs the salt. When the salty food reaches the kidney it removes the excess salt and passes it out into the urine. Therefore the correct amount of salt and water in the blood gives it the correct concentration.
The kidneys ensure that the concentration and volume in the blood remain at the correct level.
