Home remedies

People have been using home remedies based on fruit, vegetables and herbs for common health problems since the beginning of time. Your doctor's advice and help is – of course – very important, but some of these home remedies may help, too. In addition, many of them are supported by some scientific evidence. In our modern society, obesity is a common problem. There are many causes of obesity, but – for many – the problem is simply the result of an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. In these cases, eating less and doing regular exercise is obviously the best remedy, but have you considered cabbage? Recent research shows that this simple vegetable contains a chemical called tartaric acid. Tartaric acid stops sugar and other carbohydrates in the body becoming fat. For one month, try having a delicious cabbage salad once a day and you will see the results.

Nutrition experts recommend eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. Have you heard the expression 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away'? Apple is, in fact, an excellent remedy for mental depression. The chemicals in the fruit – such as vitamin B, phosphorus and potassium – help the body produce glutamic acid. So, beat depression by eating one chopped apple with milk and honey for breakfast and another apple after lunch.

Herbs always feature strongly in home-remedy recipes. If you suffer from halitosis, make an infusion with two cups of hot water and parsley. When it is cold, use it as a mouthwash – it really works! Herbs and herbal teas, in fact, are well-known remedies for many conditions. Try a herbal tea with lemon juice for indigestion, before and after meals. Have you noticed how people always take grapes to hospitals, but never eat them at home? Everyone has a remedy for the common cough, but not many people mention grapes. There's some evidence that grapes help the lungs become strong. When you have a cough, drink a cup of grape juice three times a day. Whatever your health problem, there's no doubt that a diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs is certainly going to help.
