Ibn Sina, or Avicenna, (d. 1037) wanted to prove that the universe has an ultimate cause.

The existence of something is either possible or necessary. If it’s existence is necessary then that is what we are looking for namely God. If it’s existence is possible then its existence and non-existence is equally probable.

It requires an external cause to necessitate its existence. The cause is necessarily existent (wajib al wujud), therefore God.Therefore, in either case God exists.
