What is the minimum time limit for these two events?

The selection shall be an original cutting or arrangement of prose literature from published short stories or plays.

Plays or musicals written in poetic verse (Shakespeare) are acceptable

You are required to use a paper manuscript for these events.

Introductory remarks concerning the author, selection and cutting are designed to (Choose all that Apply)

The selection must be memorized.

The contestant may use a lectern or speaker's podium.

Prose corresponds to usual patterns of speech while verse or poetry emphasizes emotions and ideas expressed through figurative language.

A performer's use of caricatures or stereotypes should not be penalized if appropriate to the selection.

A performer may represent multiple characters but it is not advised to do so.

Any piece of prose literature, short stories, or plays can be used regardless of the literary merit of the piece and suitability to the performer and audience. The judge cannot lower rank or points based upon the literary merit of the selection.

The contestant will also be evaluated in terms of technique (breathing, tone, pitch, enunciation, phrasing, pace, etc.) and artistry (presentation of mood, vocal characterization, flow of narration, etc.).

You can not be disqualified in this event for any reason.

The cutting should reflect a significant theme that conveys levels of emotion, conflicts, and a resolution.

Distinct characterization, while important, does not need to be consistent as long as the performer has a lively and energetic performance.

According to the ballot, the author and title do not need to be stated.

Narration in this event is allowed as long as it is distinct from the other characters portrayed.
