In Finland, there was once an area known as Viena Karelia. The people there were great storytellers and had many folktales and legends. The most famous of these is the Kalevala. This is a collection/text of several poems that forms one long story. The Kalevala tells tales of magical/suitable beings and suitable/scary monsters.
For centuries, storytellers—called rune singers—learned and spoke the Kalevala from memory. Jussi Huovinen (1924–2017) was Finland’s last great rune singer. When he died, the ancient culture of singing the Kalevala came to an end.
