After losing control of the Soviet satellite states, hard line Communists blamed Gorbachev for losing control and threatening Soviet security.
Gorbachev's position became worse when Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia all declared themselves independent during 1990.
In August 1991, the Communist hardliners staged a coup against Gorbachev. The president of the Soviet Republic asked the people of Moscow to oppose the coup and Gorbachev continued in government, but the coup severely damaged his authority.
The leaders of the other Soviet republics took advantage of Gorbachev’s weakness and 2 of them joined together in a Commonwealth of Independent States.
Gorbachev could not continue under these circumstances and on 25th December 1991, he announced his resignation as Soviet Leader. His resignation was immediately followed by the break up of the Soviet Union.
