Use the right size tool. Don’t use a small tool for heavy work or a large tool for fine work.

Before you use a tool be sure it is clean and in good condition.

Use your hands or fingers to test if a tool is sharp.

Be sure the tool handle is loose so that it moves as you work.

Its OK to use a dull or broken tool. If you have time report the defect to the instructor.

Always carry tools by the blade.

When you carry a tool, hold it so the point or sharp edge is aimed up toward the ceiling.

Avoid holding the tool with one hand and working with the other hand. Fasten the work down so you can work with both hands.

When you are ready to do work, you may not stand on one foot, and don’t over reach.

Don’t lay tools down near the edge of the bench, or where someone might trip over them.

Never aim a cutting tool toward your hands, arms, or body. Aim the tool away from you and others at all times.

Always keep your hands and arms in line with the path of a cutting tool.

When you are finished with a tool leave it with the other tools lying around.

Use the tools only if you understand how to use them correctly and safely. If you’re not sure, check with the instructor.
