Em Portugal, entre 1926 e 1974, houve uma ditadura. Nests período, o regime ditatorial controlava tudo e todos. Havia uma polícia política, a PIDE (Polícia Interna de Defesa do Estado), que controlava as pessoas, as suas ações e a Comissão de Censura, que exercia o controlo dos meios de comunicação social. Naquela época, não havia liberdade de expressão, nem eleições livres e democráticas, por exemplo, os cidadãos não podiam viajar para outros países sem a permissão do Governo e os opositores ao regime eram perseguidos e, muitas vezes, presos e torturados.
A ditadura terminou com a revolução de 25 de Abril de 1974. Com ela, extinguiram a PIDE e a Censura.Agora, e porque Portugal se tornou num Estado de Direito democrático, as pessoas já se podem expressar e viajar livremente. Existem eleições livres por sufrágio universal. Para além disso, Portugal integra, desde 1986, a União Europeia, o que reforça ainda mais as suas convicções democráticas.
