The Seer's Son

It was hopeless. With the key stuck fast in the rusted padlock, Jake stepped back, wiping angry tears from his face. The plan was to quickly unlock the gate thus releasing the pitiful prisoner – but it hadn’t worked. From the interior gloom, two saucer-like eyes emerged, scrutinising Jake keenly. Below them, quivering lips parted and a raspy voice wavered pathetically through the bars,
“Pl-please, please! I’m sorry … so sorry … ”
With that, the spindly waif collapsed in a shuddering heap upon the filth and detritus of the cave. Jake felt a stab of guilt and self-loathing. If only he had not listened to the advice of his uncle; he was no hero. His leaden heart weighed heavily in his chest as he turned on his heel, took one last remorseful look at the condemned creature and left.

How does Jake feel as he tries to unlock the gate (line 1)?

a)

Distraught

b)

Frustrated

c)

TV Reviews

Perfect Sunday night entertainment Last night, we were treated to the first instalment of Channel 1’s new drama, ‘Dulpark’. For weeks, viewers have been teased by trailers, snippets and plot theories about the all-new, star-studded production. Did it live up to the hype? Oh, yes! After a gripping opening scene, the ingenious plot-line twisted and turned like an oily snake in a tub of eels. The acting was superb, the period costumes exquisite and the quality of acting was unparalleled. Ernie Reblane is perfect in his role as the dashing soldier with Tim Harling providing theatrics as his nemesis. An outstanding success, ‘Dulpark’ has restored thrilling, unadulterated enjoyment to our Sunday evenings. Like watching paint dry (but less interesting) After the recent TV campaign and promotion on social media, I was looking forward last night to enjoying the first episode of the trilogy, ‘Dulpark’. However, the only positive I can offer is that I will benefit from extra sleep each week as the ‘drama’ was so utterly un-dramatic I nodded off with 20 minutes to go. The storyline was staid and predictable with Ernie Reblane embarrassing himself by speaking in a horribly twee accent. Tim Harling provided laughable moments as he parodied a typically villainous cad, complete with monocle and scar, which sadly demonstrates his limited acting range. Utterly disappointing. Next Sunday I will do something fun instead, like trimming my toenails.

The two writers strongly disagree with one another. However, they do agree on one point in their reviews. What is it?

a)

The acting was not believable.

b)

There was a lot of publicity about the series before it aired.

c)

The costumes and props were excellent.

d)

Ernie Reblane is a young, inexperienced actor.

Cinema Complaint

Dear Mrs Trout

Thank you for your letter concerning your visit to our cinema on May 3rd . I am sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the treatment you received and I’m disappointed that you will dissuade others from visiting in future. In response to your specific questions:

1. Yes, you are expected to pay the full-price cost for a ticket as you are clearly an adult. Although you pointed out that you were wearing a mini-skirt and liked ‘Little Mix’, your face and lack of legally recognised I.D. say otherwise.

2. No, if you are refused entry to the cinema, you are not entitled to free sweets.

3. Sandra is a very pleasant, well-trained and experienced member of

staff who denies calling you such a derogatory term. Witnesses to the scene confirm that she was most restrained throughout.

You will be hearing from our solicitors as we are claiming compensation for the damage caused to our popcorn machine. The Fire Service will be contacting you separately about the appalling behaviour and language you used when they cut you free.

Yours sincerely

Mr Warner
