Writing About What You Enjoy

Instructions for the student:

The goal is to write about your own hobbies and routine.

Remember the rule from our lesson: after the verb enjoy, we must use the gerund (-ing) form.

Example:

• "I enjoy watching Netflix."

• "We enjoyed talking with them."

Your Task:

Please write a short paragraph (about 3-5 sentences) in English. Answer this question:

"What do you enjoy doing on the weekends?"

To help you start, you can use these phrases:

• "On Saturdays, I enjoy..."

• "In my free time, I also enjoy..."

• "Something I don't enjoy doing is..."

• "When I have time, I..."

Challenge (Extra Step):

If you feel confident, try to use other verbs from our lesson in your paragraph!

• Verbs + gerund (-ing): avoid, finish, practice.

• Verbs + infinitive (to + verb): want, need, plan.

  "On the weekends, I enjoy relaxing at home. I usually practice speaking English with my friends online. I want to travel more, so I am planning to visit the beach next month. I avoid waking up early on Sundays."

Writing Practice: Finishing Your Day

Instructions for the student:

Hello, Jessica! Let's practice with another verb that uses the gerund.

Remember our rule from the lesson: after the verb finish, we must use the gerund (-ing) form.

Example from the guide:

• "He finished doing his homework."

Your Task:

Please write a short paragraph (about 3-5 sentences) about your daily routine. Answer this question:

"What tasks do you usually finish doing before the end of your day (at work or at home)?"

To help you start, you can use these phrases:

• "At the end of my workday, I always finish..."

• "When I get home, I have to finish..."

• "I can't relax until I finish..."

Challenge (Extra Step):

In your paragraph, try to also include the verb avoid + (-ing) or practice + (-ing).

Example of a paragraph with the challenge:

"At the end of my day, I always finish sending my last emails. Before I leave the office, I also finish organizing my desk for the next morning. I avoid starting a new big task after 4 PM. I think it's important to practice ending the day on time."

Writing Practice: Your Future Plans

Instructions for the student:

Great work! Now, let's practice the other pattern: verbs that use the infinitive.

Remember the rule: verbs like plan, want, and need are followed by the infinitive (to + verb).

Examples from the guide:

• "I want to watch a movie."

• "I am planning to buy a laptop."

• "I need to sleep more."

Your Task:

Please write a short paragraph (about 3-5 sentences) about your goals for the future. Answer this question:

"What are you planning or hoping to do in the next year?"

To help you start, you can use these phrases:

• "Next year, I am planning..."

• "I really want..."

• "First, I need..."

• "I also hope..."

Challenge (Extra Step):

To make your paragraph even better, try to use a verb that needs a gerund (-ing). For example: "I am planning to travel, and I'm considering going to the beach."

Example of a paragraph with the challenge:

"Next year, I am planning to get a new job. I want to find a position closer to my home. First, I need to update my CV. I also enjoy learning new things, so I'm considering taking a new course to help my career."
