(a)
Apple Grumble
Said the crumble to the custard as he cooled-off in his tin,
“I fear the end is near – I see stomachs coming in!
They’re seated at the table with their bowls and spoons in place
One fat man has eyed me up with longing on his face.
It’s not enough to stir me up then hurl me in to bake,
They also plan to scoff me down like last night’s hapless cake
I wish my toppings weren’t so good, my filling not so sweet,
Then perhaps they’d hunt around for something else to eat.
Oh, woe is me! My end is nigh! Farewell, my creamy friend!
Let’s both go down together, hold me close until the end...”
The custard gurgled gently as she rested in her pan,
“Fear not, my love, have faith in me – I’ve got a clever plan!
Whilst simmering, I made sure that my bottom got too hot -
I burnt myself completely and I’ve ruined the whole lot!
Once we’re served, we’ll taste so foul they’ll scrape us both away,
And we’ll be free, as one at last, together come what….”
Before she finished speaking, she was lifted from the hob
And deftly poured into a jug in one unseemly blob.
A gasp was heard, “It’s burnt!” they cried, “Oh, boo!” a glum girl said,
“Don’t worry, dear,” her mother soothed, “we’ll have ice cream instead!”
Into the bin sad Custard slid, with one heart-rending moan.
Her plan had failed, she’d come undone; now Crumble was alone.
She winced as Crumble hovered on a spoon above a bowl
And whispered, in a broken voice, “Have mercy on his soul.”
According to the poem, which of these events happens first, chronologically?
The custard was heated up.
People came into the room.
A cake was eaten.
The crumble came out of the oven.

The Robin:
After the deluge, the allotment site was unusually empty. The robin shook his wet feathers and hopped hungrily from one part of the allotment plot to another, keeping Frank in his vision all of the time. The old gardener poured a strong tea from his flask and shared two biscuits with the robin. On a patch of earth a tiny daffodil shoot could be just seen protruding from the soil, a magical sight shared between Frank and the robin. Both of their hearts thawed at the thought of the coming spring. The hard winter would soon be over and two solitary creatures, now united in their friendship, had both survived another year.
Which statement is incorrect?
Frank was an elderly gardener.
Frank was a lonely old man.
Frank liked his tea well brewed.

The scruffy head peered through the bars. Would this be his lucky day? He thought back to the times when he was loved and looked after. He had been the centre of attention as the children loved to throw a ball for him, the dad loved to take him for walks and the mum always provided him with fresh water and tasty food. That was before they left and now he was here, in this strange place. He felt tears well up in his eyes as he reminisced over the happy days, when a sudden noise made him prick up his ears; a snatch of a voice on the breeze followed by a laugh. A warden stopped outside his cage, unlocked the door and picked him up. His tail wagged like mad as two suntanned children ran down the walkway towards him. It was his lucky day. He was going home.
What made the dog hopeful?
A laugh.
A snatch of a voice.
A sudden noise.
The two children.
Last Post:
Ted dusted down his bugle and played the Last Post. The Last Post for a lost village and the lost villagers that remained. The mournful notes rang tremulous across the black slag heaps touching the dead. Like the morning mist, the music permeated the villagers and they responded in their hearts and in their souls. Ted stood at the entrance to the discarded mine and played over and over. As his voice grew in power, so the sound swelled loudly calling, begging, pleading. Doors that had remained shut, began to open...
Which statement is correct?
Ted often played his bugle.
The villagers came out of their houses to hear the music.
The music began loudly then trailed away.

How the World Became
At the dawn of time there existed only two gods: Koti and Zinta. Earth was a barren wasteland which the gods planned to fill with new life. First, Koti sowed an abundance of seeds. He conjured up a powerful storm to water his foliage, then, with an almighty heave, he rolled the sun closer to warm the earth. Before long, plants of all shapes and sizes covered the land in a sea of lush leaves, blossom and fruit. He was pleased with his work. Yet something was missing.
“Animals!” he exclaimed, “We need animals!”
This was a job for Zinta, the more talented of the pair. She moulded wonderful creatures to wander her earth and birds to fly in the wind. However, after three days, the beautiful animals always died. No matter how hard she tried, none of her creatures lasted. Full of determination, she worked tirelessly, night after night, to create a brand new creature, one which was more refined and intricate than ever before. Once it was accomplished, she sat back with bated breath to see how her new model fared. Alas, after less than one day, the new creature faded and perished, just like the others. This was the last straw for Zinta. Hot tears coursed like waterfalls from her eyes as she clenched her fists and gnashed her teeth. Finally spent, she gazed down upon the earth and could barely believe her red-ringed eyes. Her tears had filled the dips and crevices of the land with water which the animals were drinking from. Now that the oceans, seas, lakes and rivers had been formed, her creations no longer died and the animal kingdom began to thrive.
Which word in line could be defined in a dictionary as ‘with impurities or unwanted elements having been removed by processing’?
