1st Grade Coin Recognition Quizzes

Teach first graders to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters by combining visual clues with each coin’s name and value. After direct comparison and sorting, move into matching exercises and simple real-world prompts that require students to select the correct coin for a stated value.

Useful Grade 1 exercises include matching coin images to names and values, circling a requested denomination, sorting mixed coins, and identifying repeated coins in a group. Once identification is secure, students can count sets of the same denomination to strengthen numerical value association.

First graders frequently confuse nickels and quarters, think a dime is worth less because it is smaller, or identify the front of a coin but not the reverse. Use mixed orientations and require students to justify answers with at least two clues, such as edge texture, size, pictured details, or value.
