Spiritual The sense of belonging and purpose people experience in a location. Economic The availability of resources and opportunities that allow people to meet their basic needs and thrive.

Briefly explain what happened in Cossack, Western Australia.

In 1898, a cyclone destroyed a significant portion of the town of Cossack. As the size of pearling and transport ships began to increase in the early 1900s, the harbour at Cossack was no longer suitable to accommodate these. The pearling industry was relocated to Broome, a new port was opened at Port Samson, and the town of Cossack was eventually abandoned in the 1950s. Today the historic buildings in the town are a tourist attraction.

Identify and justify some push and pull factors that exist for people thinking about whether they should move to Baltimore today.

Push factors include: closure of mines and factories lack of jobs as a result unattractive decaying buildings such as factories make town seem abandoned. Pull factors include: availability of STEM jobs good transport links regeneration of city buildings because of new jobs.

Define the term ‘urban decay’

Urban decay refers to a situation in which a city area has fallen into a state of disrepair through its people leaving the area or not having enough resources to look after it.

Suggest reasons some people continue to live in decaying urban environments, and why others might choose to move.

Reasons to stay in a decaying urban environment include: - history of family living in the area - having a job nearby - owning a home and not having a buyer for it Reasons to move include: - schools and other services having closed down. - security: increase in crime against people and property.

Study this picture. Identify some of the specific signs that indicate an area is in urban decay. This is a disused factory near Baltimore

Observations that indicate urban decay include: broken windows burnt-out buildings no maintenance of vegetation or surrounds signs of dirty, unmaintained buildings little sign of human activity.

Consider the information on Kanowna and imagine that you have been employed at the Kanowna Belle Gold Mine. You have been given the option of housing within Kalgoorlie or within the original Kanowna township. Consider the potential advantages and disadvantages of both options and explain what your final decision would be.

Advantages of living in Kanowna would include proximity (closeness) to the mine and therefore a short commute to work. However the disadvantages are that there is little infrastructure left, with only 10 people living there. My final decision would be to live in Kalgoorlie, as there are more people, shops and things to do when not working.

In your own words, define the term ‘liveable city’.

A liveable city is one that promotes healthy and happy people. It may have lots of facilities, affordable houses, choice of leisure activities etc.

To summarise, Jayden has a strong sense of home as a child, and he has drawn this bigger. Jayden's mother, because she is an adult, has named the streets. Jayden does not have the same concept of proportion or scale as his mum and he is less aware of the relative distances.

If you wished to work as a national park ranger, identify which of the places in this picture would be best?

A national park ranger would be best suited to a natural environment such as Monkey Mia or Kangaroo Island.

If you were planning a career in the theatre, which of the places in this picture would be best? Justify your response.

Large cities would best suit someone planning a career in theatre. Cities such as Melbourne or Sydney have a lot to offer in terms of the arts.

If you wished to live in a relaxed coastal environment close to a capital city, which of the places in this picture would be best? Justify your response.

Byron Bay would suit somebody wishing to live in a relaxed coastal town close to a capital city. It is on the coast.

Consider this picture. Explain why you think people might describe the same place in different ways.

People may have different perceptions of what is important to them, they may not know distances or how much space something occupies. People may not know the names of things but instead, what things look like.

Define what makes a place remote.

It is a long way from major population centres.

Determine the main use for farmland in the area surrounding Griffith.

The main use for farmland is orchards and vineyards.

Is this an example of farming type A or type B?

The main use for farmland around Griffith is orchard or vineyard. This is an example of farming type A.

Identify two natural factors and two human factors that might have influenced people to choose to live in the Griffith area.

There are a number of possibilities. For example, the fertile soil and flat land have influenced people to choose Griffith for farming (natural factors). Opportunities to make a living by farming or in businesses that support the community (human factors) have also encouraged people to move to Griffith.

Describe why rural communities are under threat.

Rural communities are under threat. This is because many people, most of whom are young, are leaving in search of education and employment elsewhere.

Describe the change in the speed of settlement of inland Australia that is illustrated by this picture

Between 1788 and 1860 only about 10 per cent of Australia had been settled by non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The small regions were within about a 400-kilometre radius of Sydney and inland from Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. By 1880, almost 50 per cent of the continent had been occupied. Only the far north and the desert heart had not been occupied by immigrants. By 1890, much of the north of Australia had been settled. The most rapid growth in occupation came between 1860 and 1880.

Study this picture. Use your atlas to compare the location of soldier settlements with a rainfall map of Australia. Were soldier settlements located in places that receive good rainfall for farming?

The soldier settlements were mostly on land that receives over 500 millimetres of rainfall per year, but some places receive less than this.
