What factors make up an ecosystem and what are examples of each

a. Abiotic factors -the nonliving parts of the ecosystem (water, oxygen, temperature, soil, sunlight) b. Biotic- all the living and formerly living parts of an ecosystem.

Define or describe each level of organization identified in #5.

a. Organism- a single living thing b. Species- organisms who can reproduce and have offspring who care also capable of reproducing c. Population- members of the same species living in an area together d. Community- all the living populations living in one area together e. Ecosystem- all the living organisms in an area and the nonliving factors that they interact with f. Biome- a geographic region that has the same climate and a unique set of plants and animals that thrive in that climate g. Biosphere- the Earth and all the biomes contained on it

a. Producer- use photosynthesis to convert radiant energy form the Sun and convert it into chemical energy stored as glucose b. Consumer- eat other organisms to get energy c. Decomposers- break down dead organisms and waste and return nutrients to the soil for producers to use

1. What are the 3 different types of consumers? Know the difference between each type of consumer (hint- what do they eat?).

a. Herbivore- eat only plants (producers) b. Carnivore- eat only other animals (consumers) c. Omnivore- eats both plants and animals (producers and consumers)

a. An energy level in a food chain or food web.

a. 1 st trophic level= producers b. 2 nd trophic level= primary consumers c. 3 rd trophic level= secondary consumers d. 4 th trophic level= tertiary consumers

a. One pathway showing how energy from the sun moves through an ecosystem

1. What is a food web?

a. Shows many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem (most organisms have more than one food source when you look at a food web).

1. How are food chains and food webs similar? How are they different?

a. Both show the flow of energy through an ecosystem. b. Food chain shows one path energy can flow through, Food webs show ALL possible pathways energy can flow through.

1. What do the arrows in a food chain/web represent?

a. The direction that the energy is moving (points to who is doing the consuming)

1. Know how to identify the producers and different orders of consumers in a food web.

a. Producers->primary consumer->secondary consumer->tertiary consumer

1. How much energy is transferred between each trophic level of the food chain and the original source of this energy (10% rule).

a. 90% of the energy in an organism is used up carrying out life functions. 10% of their energy will get passed on to the organism that eats it.

1. What is an energy pyramid? What does each level of an energy pyramid represent? Know how to assemble an energy pyramid and identify the producers and different orders of consumers.

a. A pyramid shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another. It also shows the size of the population at each level. Producers are always at the bottom (largest population and most energy) and tertiary consumers are always at the top (smallest population and least energy)

1. Why are decomposers so important to an ecosystem?

a. Decomposers complete the “cycle” they return nutrients to the soil that producers can use to do photosynthesis and keep the energy flow moving through an ecosystem.

1. What is photosynthesis? What is the importance of photosynthesis in an ecosystem?

a. Photosynthesis- producers take in carbon dioxide and water and radiant energy from the sun and use it to produce glucose (sugar with chemical energy stored in it) and oxygen. b. Reactants- CO 2 and water c. Products- glucose(sugar) and oxygen d. This is how plants make the sun’s energy useable and it provides the food for all living things.

1. What is cellular respiration? What is the importance of cellular respiration in an ecosystem?

a. Cellular respiration is how all organisms (all cells) break down their food to get energy. b. They take in oxygen and glucose and break it apart to release the chemical energy (ATP’s) from the glucose. They give off CO 2 and water as waste products. c. Reactants- oxygen and glucose d. Products- CO 2 and water e. This is how organisms get energy from their food (ATP energy from glucose)
