2nd/3rd Grade - Place Value

Place Value is the 

VALUE (worth)

of each digit in a number.

​For now, let's talk about the HUNDREDS, TENS and ONES places.

A number stays the same, but it's VALUE depends on where it falls in a number.

A single digit number or the number on the right....represents the ONES place.

9 or 19 

9 is the example.

The number to the left of the ONES place is in the TENS place. Here the TENS place is represented by the 4.

​Ten sets of one make Ten

​1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 10

​A 4 is always a 4, but its how much it is worth (its value) increases

to 40 when it lands in the Tens place of a number....like 45 or 145

For example...in the number 250

the VALUE of the 5 is really 50 as it lands in the TENS place. 

5x10=50

10+10+10+10+10=50
