Employment Contract

  • Defines the employer-employee relationship, including the terms and conditions of employment.

Job Title

  • Designation given to the employee, for example, Accounts Assistant, Secretary and Purchasing Executive.

  • Can be used to identify a particular job within  an organisation.

Job Description

  • Summary of the essence of the job.

  • Gives  the reader a complete and concise account of what is involved in the job. 

  • Job duties and responsibilities are the heart of a job description.

Allowances

  • Any monetary benefit offered by the employer to its employees for meeting expenditures, over and above the basic salary.

Salary

  • Rates of salaries or wages or bonus to be paid are subject to the negotiation between the employee or the trade union representing employees and the employer

  • Agreed amounts should be clearly stated in the contract.  For hourly, daily or piece-rated workers, employers should also indicate the basic rate of pay (e.g. $X per hour, day or piece).

Working hours

Leave entitlement

  • All holiday and medical leave entitlements of the employee should be clearly stated.

  • An employee is entitled to eleven public holidays with full pay at the gross rate of pay in each year.  The public holidays are gazetted.

  • Examples are paid vacation, productivity incentive schemes, and healthy life-style incentives.

  • Compensation given to employees who are injured or die in the course of their work should be outlined in the contract

Terms of notice

  • A contract of employment can be ended by either the employer or the employee after giving due notice with or without giving notice.

  • A minimum number of days of notice of termination that must be given before an employee could walk out of the job. 

  • This is to give the employer a reasonable time to find a replacement.

Probation period

  • An employer may fix a probation period to ascertain the suitability of an employee.
