Subordinating vs. Coordinating Conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions are used to combine a dependent clause to an independent clause
–Ex. Since I ate too much candy, I had to get five cavities filled at the dentist’s office.
•“Since” is the subordinating conjunction.
•Notice that “Since I ate too much candy” is not a complete thought; therefore, it depends on the rest of the sentence in order to make sense.

Subordinating vs. Coordinating Conjunctions
Coordinating conjunctions are used to combine two or more independent clauses.
–Ex. I had to go to the dentist’s office today, so I missed school.
So is the coordinating conjunction.
Notice that “I miss school” and “I had to go to the dentist’s office today” are both complete thoughts.
