Tā shì Niǔyuē Dàxuéde xuésheng. He/She is a student of New York University.

45

Grammar: The Verb Yŏu = “Have”

This verb means “have.” "I have a question" would be Wŏ yŏu wèntí. Other examples include:

Nĭ yŏu Zhōngwén míngzi ma? Do you have a Chinese name?

你有事吗? Nĭ yŏu shìr ma? / Nĭ yŏu shì ma? Can I help you? ("事 shì": thing;different from "是 shì" to be )

Zhāng lăoshī yŏu Mĕiguó xuésheng ma? Does Professor Zhang have American students?

46

Open Ended

Can I help you? (Type in Pinyin)

47

Grammar: The Auxiliary Verb Xiăng = “Would like to”

It is often used when a speaker of lower social status makes a request to someone of higher social level. Xiăng is appropriate to use in this situation as the student has a question for his teacher.

Wŏ xiăng qĭng wèn nín yíge wèntí. I would like to ask you a question.

Wŏ xiăng qù wèn Zhāng Lăoshī yíge wèntí. I would like to go and ask Professor Zhang a question.

48

Xiăng can also be used to express one's wishes or plans. It needs to be followed by a verb phrase. For example:

Wŏ xiăng xué Zhōngguó lìshĭ. I want to study Chinese history.

Wŏ xiăng qù Zhōngguó. I want to go to China.

52

Grammar Nín

Nín is used to address people of higher status, such as lăoshī (teacher) or jīnglĭ (manager). Notice that nín, like other pronouns in Chinese, can function both as a subject, e.g., nín hăo (polite form of “Hello”) and as an object e.g., wèn nín (ask you).

Zhāng jiàoshòu, nín hăo. Hello, Professor Zhang.

Wáng xiáojie, nín hăo mā? Ms Wang, how are you?

Wŏ xiăng qĭng wèn nín yíge wèntí. I would like to ask you a question.

Tā jiào nín Lĭ jiàoshòu ma? Does he call you Professor Li?

53

Open Ended

I would like to ask you a question. (Type in Pinyin)

54

Grammar: qĭng

Chinese people frequently use “qĭng + verb” pattern to make their request more polite, especially to people of higher social status. Qĭng wèn (Please ask) sounds more polite than simply saying wèn. More examples:

Qĭng zuò. Please be seated.

Qĭng jìn. Please come in.

Qǐng zài shuō yībiàn. Please say it again.

Qĭng jiào tā Lĭ Jiàoshòu. Please call him/her Professor Li.
