Newton's First Law:
Law of Inertia

2
I've heard of Isaac Newton.
Yes
No
Isn't that a type of cookie?
3
Poll
Isaac Newton is familiar to me and I may know some of his Laws of Motion...
yes
no
4
Law #1:
An object at rest tends to remain at rest.
5
Law #1: (continues)
An object in motion tends to stay in motion...
6
Law #1: (continues)
at a constant velocity and in a straight line...
7
Law #1: (concluded)
until it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.
8
Newton's 1st Law
(Law of Inertia)
An object at rest tends to remain at rest. An object in motion tends to remain in motion at a constant velocity and in a straight line until it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.
9
Multiple Select
Which completes this law: An object in motion...
tends to remain in motion
tends to remain in motion at a constant velocity
tends to remain in motion at a constant velocity and in a straight line
tends to remain in motion at a constant velocity and in a straight line until it is acted upon by an unbalanced force.
10
Newton's 2nd Law
F=ma
11
Force equals mass times acceleration.
F = ma
12
Multiple Choice
What is a Force?
Something a Jedi uses
Force is inertia.
Force is a push or a pull.
13
Multiple Choice
What is mass?
how much something weighs
amount of atoms in an object
14
Multiple Choice
Acceleration is...
speed
m/s2 or rate of change in velocity
15
Poll
Are you with me so far?
Yes, keep going!
Kind of, I'll review this Quizizz.
I have questions and I will write them down.
Some of this sounds familiar, but I will need your help!

Open Ended
Engineers at SpaceX must determine the net force needed for its Starship rocket to achieve an acceleration of 70 m/s2 . If the mass of the rocket is 5,000,000 kg, how much net force must the rocket develop?
Please write any ideas you may have on how to solve this. If you don't know how to solve, that's ok....write what you do know.
Consider starting here: What is the mass of the Starship Rocket?
23
F=ma
F = ?
m = 5,000,000 kg
a = 70 m/s2
First, drop all units and fill in the known variables.
Second, know that numbers and letters next to each other imply multiplication.
Then, multiply the numbers (ma) and this equals the Force.
Last, Force is measured in Newtons.
24
Show your work:
F=ma
F = ?
m = 5,000,000 kg
a = 70 m/s2
F = 5,000,000 x 70
F = 350,000,000 Newtons
25
Newton's 3rd Law
Action/Reaction
26
The action force is equal in magnitude to the reaction force and opposite in direction.

27
Example
paddle moving back =
boat moving forward
28
Example:
Rocket fuel = action force
Rocket propelling = reaction force
