What Is Geography??

The study of the Earth's land, water, people, plants, and animals.

3

Location

  • Relative Location: Where something is compared to something else. For example, New Mexico is east of Arizona.

  • Absolute Location: Identifies the exact location of a place using coordinates of latitude and longitude, or a street address. For example, South Valley Academy is located at 3426 Blake Rd SW, Albuquerque, NM 87105.

4

Latitude

  • Lines of latitude measure north-south position between the poles.

  • The Equator is defined as 0 degrees, the North Pole is 90 degrees north, and the South Pole is 90 degrees south.

  • Lines of latitude are all parallel to each other, thus they are often referred to as parallels.

5

Longitude

  • Lines of longitude, or meridians, run between the North and South Poles. They measure east-west position.

  • The Prime Meridian is assigned the value of 0 degrees, and runs through Greenwich, England.

  • Meridians to the west of the Prime Meridian are measured in degrees west, and likewise those to the east of the Prime Meridian are measured to by their number of degrees east.

6

Coordinates

  • Cartographers and geographers divide the Earth into longitudes and latitudes in order to locate points on the globe. Each location on Earth has its unique latitude and longitude.

  • Each location on Earth has its unique latitude and longitude.

  • Where the latitude and longitude intersect are the "coordinates" of a location.

  • Coordinates are generally written latitude (North or South), and then latitude (East or West) =  (3°N, 102°E)

7

Hemispheres

  • The Equator and the Prime Meridian both divide Earth in two. Each half of Earth is called a "hemisphere".

  • The Equator divides Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres.

  • The Prime Meridian divides Earth into Eastern and Western hemispheres.

  • Every location is in two hemispheres - North or South AND East or West.

Regions

  • A region has a unifying human or physical feature such as population, history, climate,or landforms.

  • Example: The Rocky Mountain region of the USA would include all states the Rocky Mountains run through.

  • Locations can be in multiple regions, depending on the unifying characteristic being described or compared.
