The Eastern Front

  • The Eastern Front refers to the frontline between German and Austria Hungary against Russia.

  • It wold see some of the most brutal fighting of the First World War.

  • The Russians mobilise faster than expected and push into eastern Germany.

  • The Germans counter attack however and push them out.

  • The Russians are defeated at the Battle of Tannenberg by General Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff.

  • The Russians are then defeated in two battles of the Masurian Lakes and are expelled entirely from Germany.

  • They will steadily retreat until 1917.
