What is government?
A government is all the people who run a community, state, or country.

What does the government do?
The government makes laws to keep communities safe, healthy and organized.

An example of a law that the government has created is traffic laws. These laws provide safety and organization.
If drivers do not obey traffic laws, accidents could happen and people could get hurt.
Driving through a red light can cost a driver over $300.

Police officers and firefighters
They are essential workers that protect the community.
Police officers keep streets, highways, and neighborhoods safe.
Firefighters protect us and our property from fire damage.

They are government services that provide people with work or improve their lives.
Public libraries provide access to information.
The US Postal Service delivers our mail.
Public schools make sure everyone gets an education.

Representative democracy
In the USA, the government is run by the people. This means that the people vote for their leaders.
These leaders establish the rules and laws for everyone to follow.

Voting is important!
The leaders that you vote for will represent you. If they do a good job, people will likely vote for them again. But if they do a bad job, they will vote for someone else in the next election.
