• Today I will describe the origins of Christianity and the history and teachings of Jesus.

• Main Idea

• Christianity developed in Jewish communities and was based on the teachings of Jesus.

Jewish Roots

Romans were tolerant of the many different religions practiced throughout the empire.

Emperor = god = may follow whatever faith they liked.

Judaism was the exception

the Jewish City of Jerusalem was captured by the Romans in 63 B.C.

In A.D. 70, Jews scattered throughout the empire - This helped spread a new religion - Christianity

Jesus of Nazareth

Christianity is based on the teaching of Jesus

We know the teachings from the four Gospels.

1. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John = New Testament

Historical records

1. Jesus was a practicing Jew and worked as a carpenter.
2. At around 30 years old, he taught different ideas from the Jewish practice.
3. Performed miracles - healing the sick

• Twelve Apostles - helped spread teachings

• Parables - Short stories about everyday life - Moral/religious lessons
